Ultrasonography of Breast
Evaluating a Breast Lump
- To determine if a lump is solid (like a fibroadenoma or cancer)
- Or fluid-filled (like a cyst)
Screening in Younger Women
- Younger women often have dense breast tissue, so ultrasound gives clearer images than mammograms.
If mammography or MRI shows something suspicious, ultrasound helps to evaluate it further.
Guidance for Procedures
- For USG guided core neddle biopsy, FNAC or Vaccum assisted Breast Biopsy
- For cyst aspiration

How the Procedure Works ?
You lie on your back or slightly turned. A Water based gel is applied to the breast. A handheld probe (transducer) is moved over the area. The scan usually takes 10–20 minutes.
What are the Advantages of Ultrasound Breast?
- Safe (no radiation)
- Good for dense breasts
- Good for distinguishing cyst vs solid mass
- Quick and comfortable

What are the limitations of Ultrasound Breast?
- Cannot replace mammography for cancer screening
- May miss small microcalcifications
- Operator-dependent (quality depends on the doctor)
Is breast ultrasound painful?
There is usually no discomfort from pressure as they press the transducer against the area being examined. However, if the area is tender, you may feel pressure or minor pain from the transducer.
