Core needle Biopsy

What is a core-needle biopsy?
Core biopsy of the breast is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a hollow needle to remove small, cylinder-shaped tissue samples from a suspicious area in the breast. The samples are then sent to a laboratory for analysis to determine if cancer or other abnormal cells are present. This type of biopsy is guided by imaging, such as ultrasound, mammography, or MRI by a specialised Breast Radiologist to ensure accurate sample collection.
Types of image-guided core needle biopsies
There are 3 main types of image-guided biopsies:
- Ultrasound-guided
- Stereotactic (mammogram- or tomosynthesis-guided)
- MRI-guided
The type of image-guided biopsy that is best for you will depend on which type of imaging test will show the abnormal area best, as well as your comfort level.
